{"id":1,"date":"2014-01-12T00:12:44","date_gmt":"2014-01-12T00:12:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.buggydepot.com\/tech-center\/?p=1"},"modified":"2014-08-17T18:32:44","modified_gmt":"2014-08-17T22:32:44","slug":"gy6-camshaft-installation-guide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.buggydepot.com\/tech-center\/gy6-camshaft-installation-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"GY6 Camshaft Installation Guide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Installing a new performance camshaft is about a 45 minute job, and the engine doesn&#8217;t need to be removed.\u00a0 Only normal garage tools are required.<\/p>\n<h3>Before Installation<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Make sure the chassis and engine is clean around where you&#8217;ll be working, so that no debris falls in the open engine.<\/li>\n<li>The engine must be cold.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Step 1: Remove these items<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Airbox<\/li>\n<li>Carburetor<\/li>\n<li>Black Plastic Fan Shroud<\/li>\n<li>Valve Cover<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Step 2: Relieve Cam Chain Tension<\/h3>\n<p>Locate the <strong>cam chain tensioner<\/strong> on the top of the engine.\u00a0 Use a cross-point screwdriver to remove the top cap of the tensioner. With the cap removed, you&#8217;ll have access to the <strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">tension adjustment<\/span><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.buggydepot.com\/tech-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"109\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.buggydepot.com\/tech-center\/gy6-camshaft-installation-guide\/attachment\/3\/#main\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 762px) 100vw, 762px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Use a small flat blade screwdriver, and turn the adjuster counter-clockwise until it stops.\u00a0 Give it a little extra twist to lock the inner tensioner into place.\u00a0 This will slack the chain, allowing you to work on the camshaft.<\/p>\n<h3>Step 3: Cam Tower, Rocker Arms, Camshaft<\/h3>\n<p>Remove the four 12mm nuts from the rocker tower and remove the tower as well.\u00a0 Remove the chain from the gear by tipping the cam gear into the engine cavity and pulling the chain away.<\/p>\n<p>If you drop the chain down into the case, don&#8217;t worry.\u00a0 Use a hooked tool to grab it from inside of the case and bring it back.\u00a0 Use a flashlight to look down into the case, make sure that the chain is still on its sprocket down inside the engine.<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Reassembly<\/h3>\n<p>Grab your new camshaft and begin assembling in the reverse order.\u00a0 <strong><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">Be sure to <a title=\"Setting GY6 Camshaft Timing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.buggydepot.com\/tech-center\/finding-top-dead-center-tdc\/\"><span style=\"color: #ffff00;\">time the camshaft properly to TDC<\/span><\/a> at this point, or you can run into major valve and piston damage on your first start up.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #00ff00;\">Starting from the top<\/span><\/strong>, install the timing chain over the cam gear.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.buggydepot.com\/tech-center\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/21.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 762px) 100vw, 762px\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Reinstall the cam tower back onto the cylinder studs.\u00a0 Look for the &#8220;EX&#8221; imprinted on the tower and install it towards the exhaust valve (downward).<\/li>\n<li>Reinstall the nuts and torque to 22ft\/lbs each, progressing to each nut in a cross pattern.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Cam Chain Tensioner<\/h3>\n<p>Your chain tensioner should still be locked in its retracted position at this point. Release the tensioner lock.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t try to set the right adjustment, just &#8220;bump&#8221; the adjuster from its locked position.\u00a0 Proper tension will be set automatically.<\/p>\n<h3>Final Assembly and Inspection.<\/h3>\n<p>Reinstall everything in the reverse direction of dis-assembly.<\/p>\n<h3>Go Ride!<\/h3>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Installing a new performance camshaft is about a 45 minute job, and the engine doesn&#8217;t need to be removed.\u00a0 Only normal garage tools are required.
