• I SNAPPED A BUGGY DEPOT AXLE

November 2019 Forum Retirement
Due to lack of extra personal time (and too much spam), I'm retiring the forum and setting it to a read-only state. No new registrations or posts will be accepted as of 11/09/19. However, all information will stay up and searchable. If you spend a few minutes searching, you'll find the answers you're looking for. We may re-open the forum next spring.

went riding last weekend w/ a bunch of friends. my buddy's wife was in my blue yerf, she was following me into a bermed horseshoe and when i came out the other side i looked over my shoulder and it was on its side at the entrance.
i quickly did a u-turn to see what happened and make sure she was ok. she was fine but when i turn the yerf right side up the left rear wheel was missing w/ about 8" of axle. the axle clean snapped. ten minutes and 50ft later we found the wheel and towed it home. heres some pics and vid. ive bent plenty but this is the 1st timew ive seen 1 snap..............do i get a trophy or something

1. I know everything rusts quickly when close to salt water, but did you notice if the break was rusty immediately after it happened? I'm wondering if it slowly cracked or was a massive failure.

2. Did you recover the bearing in that carrier? Another thought is the bearing seized and scored the axle. Does it look like it snapped where the bearing ends?

When I see failures, I like to pick them apart and hopefully find better ways to fix things to prevent the same problem (even if it's unrelated). I had the third axle that was produced for BD and it served my Yerf well even with 8x10 5+5 rims. I know the axle went through some revisions after mine, so I may be comparing apples to oranges...

the rusty pics were taken a few days after. i had someone else working the camera that day and although i thought i had picks from the moment it happened, from the yerf on its side to where the the wheel ended up and all the details. due to user error ,i guess they forgot to turn the camera on or something stupid like that, when i went to down load onto the computer i didnt have half the pics i thought. probably explains why i'm not in a lot of pictures. the vid of the tow i took.
the break was clean when it happened but it rained early the next morning while it was on the trailer so it was rusty the next day. the bearing is still in there but not sure that was the issue. this yerf doesnt have reverse like my red one so i pushed it out that morning and heard or felt nothing that would indicate a bearing problem. the axle 2 yrs old was bent and probably fatigued out it was 1 of the ones that are now discounted that i had bought before they figured out they were tweaked from the git go. i had paid the full price and it was sitting in a box in the garage when they figured out there was a problem. i had spoke to travis and he said the whole batch was like that and they werent expecting another batch til the spring/summer of last year. i wanted to swap it so travis told me go ahead and use it til the new ones came and then we would swap. the next batch was the same way so i asked if could just use it up til it was so bent i couldnt stand it and trade for a crossfire axle they said to call when i was ready. i called and all is good.
never expected it to break but its part of the game. i put a crossfire axle on my red yerf and so far am very pleased with it, and i have never had a problem w/ the axle on my crossfire, so i figure its the way to go. i guess what shocks me is that my buddies wife wasnt really drivin it hard and if it was gonna happen it didnt happen under my butt. when i get situated ill post pics of the swap step by step for anyone else who might be intrested in doing the same. all parts are available here so it'll be just as convenient to get the parts.
