Bringing a spiderbox back to life...

First of all, hello,
I am new to the buggy world and decided to dive in with a spiderbox I picked up. The guy knew nothing about it and wasn't the easiest person to talk to. Ali said what the heck, it can't be that hard. I promise, at that point in time I jinxed myself. Well I got It home and decided to take an initial look at it to see the problem. Well, the wiring was all messed up. PLEASE NOTE that it had been sitting outside exposed to all the weather for about 2 months. Ordered a new harness for the engine and one for the controls. Also grabbed a new carb while I was at it, you can't beat 26 bucks on eBay. Anyway, getting to the point, I install the wiring harness and look up the diagram, and I really probobally messed up somewhere, but I put power to it, and, nothing, not even an encouraging click. Noing at all happened. By the way, I did just connect the 2 ends together that go to the brake switch, i dont know if that cold be the problem or
Could it be:
The CDI
The Starter
There is a little black box about an inch square I think it is a relay, could it be that?
Im not good with what everything is called, so if you could give me the " for dummies" explanation that would be great.
Also one last thing, there are 2 loose hoses one in the back of the engine coming off the top of the gear case thing. And one in the back by what I was told was the cylinder head cover. Do these connect somewhere?
